Why is data-driven keyword research so important?

Keyword research is a very important early stage of your SEO campaign to improve visibility in the organic search results. In order for this research to maximise discovery of relevant and valuable search terms, especially for websites which have been live for some time, it is necessary to utilise different data sources.

The research is conducted by an experienced search marketer and a native speaker from the target country. Through keyword research tools and organic search query reports (SQRs), an effective and exhaustive method is used to discover relevant and valuable keywords. The outcome of the research is supplemented by keyword difficulty scoring, organic rankings data of the website itself, as well as competitors and top ranking websites.

All the data allows for data-driven keyword research, allowing you to make informed decisions about keyword targeting in the next phases of the SEO campaign to boost the website’s visibility with relevancy, search intent, ranking difficulty and traffic growth in mind.

How it works

The process begins by completing a briefing questionnaire with your Account Manager to clarify your objectives for the research. This briefing will be visible to all the team members involved with delivering the research and is the foundation for all our quality checks.

We will require the following in order to deliver the service:

  • Access to the verified Google Search Console account for the property needs to be granted and have data for a minimum of three months. This means the website should also be live for at least three months (so that there is enough data for a search query report).
  • A list of live URLs of the website must be provided for which the keyword research is to be conducted.

The first stage of the research is to produce an organic search query report listing branded and non-branded search terms which are delivering traffic to the selection of pages and for which the pages have organic visibility.

With the organic search query report, as well as initial ‘seed’ lists of relevant words or phrases compiled from reviewing selected landing pages for the project, keyword research tools are used to explore and identify more relevant search terms according to the brief. This process ensures we maximise efficiency of the keyword discovery process.

Once the keyword discovery process is completed, additional data is added. This includes: keyword difficulty scores calculated for all researched keywords, organic rankings of the website as well as competitor websites and top ranked websites. The latter can be used to identify the search intent behind the query.

The research and data are compiled into a complete Excel file, providing data-driven research which can be used to conduct well-informed target keyword selections for pages.
