Keyword research for app store optimisation (ASO)

App store optimisation starts with identifying the best keywords to target

Improve the visibility of your app in the app stores

Since the vast majority of apps are downloaded as a result of keyword searches, it is essential that your app is keyword optimised as this will improve your visibility and return on investment. We will conduct keyword research for your app, using specialist tools to expand your existing keyword list. You will receive this expanded list in an Excel format, along with the search volume data in your target country for these keywords.

Keyword research for app store optimisation can help…

  • 1

When you want your app to maximise downloads, by being visible for as many search queries as possible.

  • 2

When you are launching an app in the app stores and need the app to rank against relevant and popular search terms.

  • 3

When you have an app that’s live in the app store(s) but have done no prior research as to what queries are being used.

  • 4

When you want your app to rank for a specific keyword, but you aren’t aware how popular it is.

  • 5

When your competitors’ apps are more visible than yours in the app stores.

Why is app store optimisation important?

In the app stores, over 80% of app downloads occur as a result of a keyword search. If your app is visible for more popular search terms, the more downloads your app will likely receive. Thus it's important to understand patterns of search that are relevant for your app. Deciding which keywords you'd like to target is the first step of improving app store visibility – a process known as app store optimisation.

Maximising the visibility or discoverability of your app can lead to increased downloads and return on investment. Targeting relevant and popular search terms is an important first step in deciding what you would like your app to rank for.

Based on a list of provided “seed” keywords, we will conduct keyword research to expand this list and will also collect search volume data for these keywords for your target market.

The list of keywords, grouped by theme, will be sent to you in an Excel format along with the search volume data.

How it works

The process begins by completing a briefing questionnaire to clarify your objectives for the research and identify your target audience. This briefing will be visible to all the team members involved with delivering the research and is the foundation for all our quality checks.

If you do not have an app that is live in the app stores, we will need a list of initial themes on which to base our research (e.g. app functions/product type/industry jargon).

If you have a live app – in addition to the above requirement – we will also need a “seed” list of keywords that you are currently targeting.

A researcher who is native to your target country will take the initial seed list (if provided) and use tools to expand and identify patterns of search that could be used in the app stores. They will also conduct research on the monthly search volume estimates for the target country for these keywords.

Once you have approved the keywords delivered, you will receive the list of keywords in an Excel format, grouped by theme and including search volume data.
