Twitter has expanded its character limit from 140 to 280 in a test for a small group of users. The current 140 character limit was an arbitrary number chosen based on the old length of text messages, something which is no longer a limitation. In a blog post announcing the test, Twitter said that it understood that the current 140 character limit was a source of major frustration for some users. It hopes that the test will encourage users to tweet more regularly by removing this pain point.Â
