Austria Orders Facebook To Delete Hate Speech

An Austrian court has ruled that Facebook must delete any 'hate posts' that are identified on its pages. The ruling includes not just posts located in Austria, but those from any country around the world, after the court said that simply blocking the posts in Austria but not internationally “was not sufficient”. This comes after the leader of the Austrian Green Party was targeted on the site. Dieter Brosz, also from the Green Party, said after the decision that Facebook could no longer maintain that it was simply a platform, but that it must now take responsibility for such postings. Recently, lawmakers in neighbouring Germany announced that any social media site could be fined 50 million Euros if it failed to delete hate speech or fake news posts upon discovery.
