The Twitter hashtag is turning ten years old. Since the hashtag was first launched on the social media platform on the 23rd of August 2007, it has grown to such an extent that the symbol is now used 125 million times each day on Twitter. The idea has also been taken up by other platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. The most used hashtag in 2007 was tweeted just 9,000 times, compared to the most used hashtag this year having already been used 300 million times. Some of the most used hashtags of all time have included the #BlackLivesMatter movement and #IceBucketChallenge, whilst the most used movie hashtag so far is #StarWars.Â
