African Internet Adoption Hit By Lack Of Local Content

Research by the Internet Society has found that a lack of local language content may be hampering internet adoption in Africa. Africa has the lowest levels of internet penetration in the world, despite improvements in infrastructure meaning that more Africans than ever can now access the internet at relatively cheap prices. African languages are extremely underrepresented online, with many African government websites only being available in English and French, despite the fact that the majority of Africans are not native English or French speakers. Businesses hoping to target African consumers are therefore encouraged to create content in the local language.
