Why is duplicate content a problem?

Duplicate content is defined as large blocks of the same content on different URLs. This can occur on different websites or within the same one, and can be an exact copy or just contain extremely similar wording. There are various causes of internal duplicate content such as canonicalisation issues, rendering the same or similar content with parameters appended to URLs or replicating untranslated content onto different language versions of a website.
