Overview

When you have content in two or more languages which needs to be aligned with the original source it is best practice to have your translation supplier conduct a multilingual text alignment, with the assistance of a professional translator.

The basic process of multilingual text alignment uses translation software to determine which source and target language segments belong together. The software puts the files side-by-side, and attempts to best pair up the source and target text before a professional translator approves and finalises the aligned translation.

This content could come from previous translations, old Translation Memories, inherited content, etc. either way it is content which you could benefit from aligning and using to update your Translation Memory for future re-use.

Once aligned, the updated and approved text can be used to either create a new Translation Memory or update an existing one. Moving forward new translation projects will be analysed against the new or updated Translation Memories in order to leverage content from the aligned text.

Quality process

The process begins by completing a briefing questionnaire to clarify your objectives. This briefing will be visible to all the team members involved with delivering the service and is the foundation for all our quality checks.

We will ask you to provide us with all the content you require to be aligned both the original source text and the corresponding translations.

One of our localisation engineers will then prepare an initial alignment of the content using a software tool to match up the source and target languages.

The next step is to send the automated alignment to a profession translator and native speaker of the target language who will work their way through the aligned content checking that the original source and the translated target match up correctly. They will then confirm this in the software.

If you have native speakers in your own team then we recommend that a final check is conducted on your side in order to approve any company or industry-specific terminology etc.

Once we have received your feedback, this will be implemented by the translator who will finally update the Translation Memory ahead of future projects.

At this stage we also recommend that terminology is extracted from the aligned content in order to begin building a glossary of approved bilingual terms. This is charged as an additional service and not covered by the cost for alignment.
