Overview

One of the biggest challenges of international SEO is successfully targeting the right content to the correct region, so that users in a particular region are presented with content that is aimed at them. This becomes particularly tough when dealing with multiple versions of content in the same language.

In response to this challenge, Google provides a helpful solution by offering the use of rel=”alternate” hreflang=”x” annotations to markup equivalent pages targeting different regions. These annotations can be deployed in HTML markup of pages, XML Sitemaps or response headers.

Regardless of the chosen deployment method for hreflang=”x”, equivalent pages targeting the different regions typically need to be identified and mapped out first which then enables creating the annotations.

How it works

The process begins by completing a briefing questionnaire to help us determine how equivalent pages can be mapped. You will be asked to supply the following information:

  • Base URL of each regional website. For instance a German version of the website can be: www.example.com/de-de/, de.example.com/ or www.example.de. You can also point us to your valid country/language selector page containing links to each regional website,
  • Patterns which can be used to identify the same page across different regions. For example, this can be an ID in the URL (example.de/product?id=1234, example.fr/produit?id=1234), an ID in a meta tag or perhaps a URL string (example.com/product/engb.html, example.com/product/enus.html).

If valid patterns exist and have been identified, we will first crawl your websites to compile a valid list of URLs on each site and then programmatically match equivalent regional URLs using the patterns. The mapping output will be supplied in an easy-to-read Excel spreadsheet that can be used to generate rel=”alternate” annotations for successful deployment of hreflang=”x”. The base service includes identifying and matching URLs for two regional websites.
