Google has updated its guidelines around Local SEO. Local SEO refers to how likely it is that your Google My Business page will show up when nearby users type in location-based search queries such as “restaurants near me”. In its local SEO guidelines, Google has revealed that SEO best practices relating to links, directories and articles can all help a Google My Business page to rank more highly. The number of reviews and how positive or negative these are can also effect the ranking of a Google My Business page. How relevant the business is to the user’s search query and their physical proximity are other, non-SEO related ranking factors.
