Google is currently creating a separate index that will be used explicitly for mobile devices. Whilst no timeline was provided, plans for the mobile-only index was confirmed, whilst it was also explained that a desktop-only index will also be continued, but that it won't be as up-to-date as its mobile equivalent. Gary Illyes, a webmaster trends analyst at Google, said during the announcement that the index would be ready in “months”, following the announcement last year that the company was experimenting on a mobile-only index. It is expected that the reasons behind the idea include Google being able to design new algorithms that will work across mobile-only content, as opposed to currently having to extract desktop data for mobile searches.Â
