Facebook Plans Subscription-Only News Service

Facebook looks set to launch a new subscription-only news service. The plans for the new product were announced at a New York conference by Facebook's head of new partnerships, Campbell Brown. The feature will allow publishers to create a paywall on Facebook's Instant Articles that would then send a user to the publisher's subscription page. Brown said that the plans had been in place for a while. Originally, Instant Articles was released as a way for news publishers to have their articles read directly on the Facebook app. However, this lead to some news agencies leaving the platform after tests showed traffic was not affected particularly positively. The paywall will begin testing in October 2017, and will take Facebook's users to a subscription form when a story is clicked on.
