16% of European businesses sold online in 2017

16% of European businesses sold their products or services online last year, according to statistics from Eurostat. Of these companies, 97% sold online in their own country, 44% sold to other EU countries and 28% sold to non-EU countries. However, the study found a high level of variation in ecommerce uptake in different European countries. It was most popular in Ireland, Sweden and Denmark, where around a quarter of all businesses sold online. On the other end of the scale, less than 1 in 10 businesses from Romania, Poland and Bulgaria sold online. The research also revealed that around 40% of businesses selling online to other countries had encountered problems when doing so. The most common problems were delivery costs and language issues.
