Purpose:

As part of the Web Design team, you will use and develop your programming and technical skills within a small team. You will be working across a broad range of software applications managing and coordinating developers and freelancers. You will be working on clients CMS systems to assist with web speed optimisation and other changes in the backend website code. In the main you will be responsible for best practice creation and implementation of optimised website code.

Key accountabilities:

  • Website development - Understand and practice software design principles and understand agile development methodologies
  • System updating and development - Working with content management systems (CMS) - a good understanding of popular CMS products including plugins and themes, security best practices - ideally on both Linux and Windows platforms
  • Web application updating and development - have a rich understanding of the technologies used for web applications, e.g databases, version control, CDNs, client-side technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
  • Website assessing - addressing site performance issues i.e. uptime and specified functionality
  • Website reviewing - reviewing code and suggesting further improvements
  • Testing - assist in the design, coding, and testing of technical solutions. Implement robust testing processes. Cross browsing testing, including mobile devices
  • Technical support - supporting Front End Development to address any browser side issues affected by Server-Side coding
  • Improving website performance - understanding of website speed and the elements that influence performance
  • Debugging - ability to debug coding issues with PHP websites
  • Interpret and scrutinize web designs - take designs from concept to launch
  • Website hosting with WHM – keeping servers up to date and liaise with server provider support team
  • System monitoring – ensuring servers and applications are running as expected
  • Development meeting - attending customer meetings helping with spec and to understand the customer needs and requirements
  • Meeting/liaising with internal clients to discuss requirements and/or project progress
  • Multitasking - working on multiple projects at the same time
  • Support - providing ongoing support to our existing customers
Team Management and Liaison
  • Project managing - coordinate and manage back-end development. Project manage all active developments with freelancers and external developer teams
  • Supporting Front End Developers, Designers and Content Care team
  • Engage with other members of the Creative team, Business Development team, Account Managers and the wider business, when required, to shape client briefing to ensure the agreed deliverable is the best fit for purpose

Skills and attributes required:

Essential:

  • PHP commercial experience and MVC framework development
  • MySQL commercial experience
  • Experience in LAMP development
  • Awareness of current technologies (HTML5 | CSS3 | .NET | Bootstrap | JavaScript | jQuery)
  • Proven experience of web speed optimisation
  • Experience in testing
  • Object-oriented programming in PHP
  • Experience using JavaScript / bootstrap
  • Good experience coding CMS templates
  • Knowledge of the major Content Management Systems like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal etc.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Be able to think outside the box
  • Good communication skills as you may be customer facing from time to time or dealing with support queries
  • Take a systematic approach to solving problems
  • Understanding of Web application design patterns
  • The desire and ability to help the company be successful
  • Experience using WHM/cPanel, desirable but not essential
  • Remain up to date with changes/advances in technology that affect our web applications both now and, in the future
  • Share your knowledge with other colleagues to support their development/understanding of the work you do and how it impacts on their areas of responsibility
  • Have excellent organisation and management skills
  • Understand the importance of on time delivery

  • Be comfortable working unsupervised
  • Ability to explain technical problems to a non-technical audience

Desirable Skills:

  • Knowledge of web design and Adobe Creative suite of software, desirable but not essential
  • Git (GitHub) experience, desirable but not essential
  • Ability to fluently write and speak a second language
