The Urdu language: an introduction


Urdu is a member of the Indo-European family of languages and is closely related to Hindi - the two languages are mutually intelligible.  It is the national language of Pakistan.

How many speakers are there of the Urdu language?


THere are 61 million speakers of Urdu in Pakistan, India (where it is one of 23 official languages) and Afghanistan. More than 160 million people understand Urdu.  When Urdu and Hindi are combined - the language is the second largest in the world.

What Urdu language issues do I need to watch out for?


Urdu is written right to left using the Persian alphabet - which is turn is an extension of the Arabic script with four additional characters giving it 32 characters. Vowels are written as diacritics above the cursive script - the script itself represents only consonants.
