Hindi - most widely spoken tongue in India

The Hindi language: an introduction

Hindi is an Indo-European language - linked therefore to French and German when Finnish and Hungarian aren't! It is spoken mainly in northern and central India and is an Indian official language. Originally, Hindi sprang from Sankskrit and has much Persian and Arabic vocabulary.   It is closely related to Urdu - the two languages are mutually intelligible.

How many speakers are there of the Hindi language?

The number of Hindi speakers is almost unbelievably large at 490 million native speakers with more than 790 million understanding the language worldwide.   Combined with Urdu it is the second most widely spoken language worldwide.

What Hindi language issues do I need to watch out for?

Written left to right, Hindi uses the Devanagari script - certainly one of the world's most attractive scripts. Devanagari has 34 consonants and 12 vowels - though the vowels are indicated by diacritics. Consonant clusters are formed into ligatures which have a particularly ornate form - and sometimes little connection with the original consonants. The language can be transliterated into a Latin scipt. There are a variety of computer keyboard layouts for the language.
